The Real Life of “Selfies” (Self-Publishers)—Five BAIPA Members, from First-timers to Pros—Tell Their Stories.
That’s what you have to look forward to at the next BAIPA meeting on June 13.
There will be a blog post about each of the speakers prior to the event. And now, meet Laurie McAndish King.
What happens when a practical midwestern gal sets off to explore the world? Laurie McAndish King’s travels seem innocent in the planning stage, but surprising adventure follows as she finds herself tracking lions on foot and without a gun in Botswana … attempting to eat a horse in southern Italy … searching for an ancient Celtic goddess in Ireland … marrying a Maasai warrior in Kenya … and sampling the world’s most expensive coffee—brewed from the excrement of a small Balinese mammal.
Award-winning travel writer Laurie King’s most recent memoir, Lost, Kidnapped, Eaten Alive! True Stories from a Curious Traveler, was self-published in 2014. Her award-winning essays and photography have appeared in Smithsonian magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, Travelers’ Tales’ The Best Women’s Travel Writing, The Sun literary journal, and other magazines and literary anthologies. Her mobile app about the San Francisco Waterfront is 5-star rated in the Apple iTunes store.
With an undergraduate degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in education, Laurie began travel writing as an escape from her successful career in marketing for high-tech, telecommunications and financial services companies.
Laurie will talk about her publishing process, important resources she used along the way, and what she learned—including tips for other independent publishers on what not to do.
Here are the five things Laurie wishes she’d known BEFORE her book launch:
- The Importance of Knowing Yourself (Why it Matters)
- What Bookstores Don’t Tell You about Author Events
- The Perils of Not Pacing Yourself
- Why You Need to Start Even Earlier than You Think
- Tips for Targeting Your Efforts Appropriately
In addition, Laurie will conduct two short afternoon workshops on “Planning Your Book Launch,” which will include a calendar of activities. You can find out more about Laurie at lauriemcandishking.com.

One of my favorite things about BAIPA is its culture of generosity, the willingness — even eagerness — to share what we have each learned in the process of bringing stories to life. We provide educational programs, networking, marketing opportunities, encouragement, and information on industry vendors and services. And lots of one-on-one advice and mentoring.
We welcome all who have an interest in making connections within the world of independent publishing and learning more about how to publish and sell their work successfully. Together we are raising the standard of independent publishing and helping our members thrive.
Do join us!
