[PAST EVENT] May Event: Working with an Illustrator and More

11 AM to 12:15 PM

Sandy Baker, an author and sometimes illustrator, will provide examples of various kinds of media and styles of illustrations, discuss how to find the right illustrator, give an example of a simple contract, discuss cost, and show how to work with that artist. This presentation is a basic how-to on finding and working with an illustrator for your book.

During this session, you will learn about:

  1. Deciding the right medium and style for the illustrations.
  2. Finding the right illustrator for your book.
  3. Determining budget, contract, and deadlines.
  4. Giving your illustrator artistic license.

About the Speaker

Sandy Baker, Author and Illustrator

Sandy Baker, Author and Illustrator

Sandy Baker writes, reads, gardens, crafts, and travels. Her 17 years in the Sonoma County Master Gardener program inspired her eight children’s gardening books; they are nonfiction with characters and a plot. Over the years since graduating from Penn State with a B.A. in English, she has been a technical writer and editor; newspaper reporter; proposal and speechwriter; country music songwriter; university development director; and now author of nine children’s books and a thriller. Sandy illustrated three of the children’s books. Her tenth book, The Exploding Belly Button Plus Twelve for middle grade will be released in June. She has been a member of Redwood Writers since 2009 and was its president 2015-2017. Sandy has also been a member of BAIPA for several years. She and her husband Bud have lived in Santa Rosa for 23 years and for almost four years hosted their Wine Country Historic Town Cottage with Airbnb. Afternoon Workshop: 1-3 PM

Contract Crafting: How to Find, Create and Negotiate Author-Friendly Contracts
with Kelley Way, Attorney

This workshop will teach you the basics of contract law and key provisions of common contracts in the publishing industry, followed by tips and strategies for a successful negotiation. The workshop will also include a mock negotiation, where you will have the chance to practice the skills you have learned.

During this workshop, you will:

  1. Learn the basics of contract law
  2. Learn about key provisions to look for in a contract
  3. Learn the basics of negotiation
  4. Practice your negotiation skills

Kelley Way was born and raised in Walnut Creek, California. She graduated from UC Davis with a B.A. in English, followed by a Juris Doctorate. Kelley is a member of the California Bar and an aspiring writer of young adult fantasy novels. BAIPA Monthly Meetings

IMPORTANT
BAIPA is now meeting on the first Saturday of every month via Zoom only for now. In general, if the first Saturday falls on a holiday or holiday weekend, we will meet on the second Saturday.

We are also having workshops on the third Saturday of every month (also via Zoom only for now. In general, if the regular monthly meeting moves to the second Saturday, then the workshop will be two weeks later.
