Recently Book Passage ordered a few of my California books for the Super Bowl sales period. This gave me a chance to meet the new manager of consignments for Book Passage, John Bessolo. He will be the contact person for all BAIPA folks who are indie authors or small publishers.

John will forward to authors the consignment agreement they must sign to participate in the Book Passage consignment program. The deal is 50% of the retail price to the author, payable after the books are sold, with the author responsible for shipping books to and from.
Note that Book Passage has a store in Marin and also one at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.
It is good for all BAIPA members to understand the prominence of Book Passage in the local book scene. They are one of the major indie bookstore survivors. They also sponsor numerous author appearances, and you can get their monthly publication on upcoming appearances by signing up for it on their website (www.bookpassage.com).
If you do consignment with Book Passage, please observe one prudent rule: Consign your book to them either offset printed or printed-on-demand from Ingram or some other non-Amazon source. Do not present your book to them as printed by Amazon CreateSpace. Amazon is anathema from the perspective of Book Passage.
Book Passage also has a “Path to Publishing” program that is somewhat parallel to the vision of BAIPA.
Program leader Becky Parker Geist will be managing a talk by Sam Barry of Book Passage for our June meeting. The topic will be some aspects of the natural synergy and partnership to be anticipated between the independent author and the independent bookstore.
