BAIPA member Robert Kourik found a unique way to sell his books—as part of a workshop. Robert is a horticultural expert, and has written several books. So he proposed a workshop to Community Education at Santa Rosa Junior College (he had to submit his application one year in advance), and they selected him out of many applicants.
In addition to selecting him to teach the class, they chose his book, Understanding Roots as the “handout” for the workshop. He sold his book to Community Education at a slightly discounted price of $20 (not the list price of $24.95) so it matched his website price. He ended up selling 25 books the first time the class was offered and 18 the second time—he made more money from the book sales than from the teacher’s fee! He also sold a few copies of another of his books, Drip Irrigation for Every Landscape and all Climates, as well. He will be presenting his third workshop in February.
Here is a description of the upcoming workshop, based on Robert Kourik’s book Understanding Roots:
Healthy Soils, Healthy Roots
Horticultural expert Robert Kourik explains and demonstrates how to develop your home garden’s fertility and productivity, improve poor plant vitality, increase vegetable and fruit yields, boost drought resistance and sustain the health of your garden’s soil. You’ll also learn how roots really grow and learn which commonly held false notions about roots are gravely in error about the use of water, fertilizer, mulch and planting techniques and what to do for the healthiest plants.
This workshop will take place at Santa Rosa Junior College on February 20th.
