Judith Briles’s Morning Presentation To BAIPA
Book Shepherd Judith Briles, a former Bay Area resident who now lives in Colorado, told a rapt audience of 70-plus people how self-published authors can become multi-million-dollar success stories — like she is.
“Be prepared to work your tush off!,” she said at the June 14 BAIPA Meeting and Workshop.
Briles’s handouts were crowded with reminders and nudges about how to get to the top of your game and stay there. Her PowerPoint slides described, among other stories, about how she came back from a million-dollar embezzlement scandal in the 1980s. Her workshop talk described how a bad fall a few years ago resulted in injuries that took months and months of arduous recovery. Clearly, reaching the level of huge success where she is now has not been easy.
Briles emphasized that “most authors fail to know their market,” and encouraged BAIPA authors to spend as much time as possible figuring that out. Another critical piece of the successful author puzzle is branding. She urged the audience to ask, “What does success look like for you?”
She shared seven secrets of highly successful authors — you had to be there to learn the secrets — and here’s another tip: start pre-selling six months before your book is ready. All in all, an information-packed presentation in both morning and afternoon.
