The next monthly BAIPA meeting, January 13, will feature Draft2Digital, a relatively recent newcomer to self-publishing that competes with Smashwords. The presentation will be given by D2D’s Director of Marketing, Kevin Tumlinson, who joined the firm 18 months ago. An authority on indie publishing and a marketing expert, he has authored numerous books. Prior to joining D2D, Tumlinson was a writer, a blogger, and the host of Wordslinger Podcast.
Draft2Digital was established by bestselling indie author Aaron Pogue and two friends in 2012 to offer a publishing alternative to authors. Its mission is to provide authors and publishers with the tools and resources necessary for publication in a manner where they retain full rights to their books, and can publish quickly without contracts and exclusivity. There are no upfront fees, and authors can access tools and resources free of charge — even if they choose not to distribute with D2D.
Writers can upload their manuscripts and obtain free eBook conversion, free layout for print, and a range of other professional resources.
D2D does not charge authors directly. Its business model takes 10 percent of the retail price for any books sold through its distribution network – which includes Amazon, AppleiBooks, Barnes and Noble, Kobo and more companies worldwide. Therefore, D2D only makes money when the author makes money.
