How to Avoid a Lawsuit: Tips and Tricks to Reduce the Risk of Being Sued

While it’s impossible to eliminate the risk of a lawsuit, it is possible to make the odds of being sued less likely. This presentation looks at the most frequently encountered types of lawsuits encountered by authors and publishers in five areas of law – copyright, trademark, right of privacy and publicity, defamation, and contracts – and what you can do to minimize the risk of encountering any of them personally.

Afternoon Workshop: 1-3pm

You’ve Been Sued; Now What? What to Do When They’ve Come For You

Sometimes, even when you’ve done everything right, you still find yourself on the receiving end of a lawsuit. This presentation covers how to respond to a cease and desist letter, how to respond to a lawsuit, and what the most common defenses are in five areas of law – copyright, trademark, right of privacy and publicity, defamation, and contracts. The presentation will also include an overview of recent cases that will have an impact on publishers and authors.
