Guidelines for Using Other People’s Content

BAIPA monthly meetings are now exclusively on Zoom, at least until we get through this COVID-19 crisis. The Zoom links will be provided to you via email on the Friday evening before, around 9 PM.
Therefore, all non-members MUST register in advance in order to participate. However, all current BAIPA members will get the Zoom info for the morning session automatically.

The general meeting begins at 9 am, the speaker presentation is at 11 am, after Q&A, networking time, introductions & announcements.

What to do if you want to use other people’s copyrighted content – does fair use apply or do you need permission?

Attorney Kelley Way will offer a refresher course on copyright law, explaining what is protected under copyright, when copyrighted content may be used without permission (e.g. under fair use law), and when permission is required. Rights and permissions expert Dan Miller will then explain how to go about finding the copyright owner and getting permission from them to use their content in your work.

Dr. C. Daniel Miller is a co-founder and co-owner of Integrated Writer Services, LLC, an independent copyright consulting service. He has served in various roles in the Colorado Independent Publishers Association (CIPA), including that of president. In addition to providing copyright clearance services and managing larger copyright clearance projects, he also consults on business aspects of independent publishing. He co-authored and independently published Copyright Clearance for Creatives, an essential guide that addresses copyright issues for the creative community.

BAIPA Monthly Meetings

IMPORTANT
BAIPA is now meeting on the first Saturday of every month via Zoom only for now. In general, if the first Saturday falls on a holiday or holiday weekend, we will meet on the second Saturday.

We are also having workshops on the third Saturday of every month (also via Zoom only for now. In general, if the regular monthly meeting moves to the second Saturday, then the workshop will be two weeks later.
