On Saturday, April 18 at 10:30 am, I’ll be presenting “Setting That Works — How Memorable Setting Can Advance Plot, Reveal Character, Echo Theme, and More” for the California Writers Club SF Peninsula.
Of course, we won’t be meeting in person, but via Zoom. Register here to get the link.
The most memorable setting is more than a pretty, or gritty description. It’s lean and strong because it’s working hard — doing two or more jobs. Not just showing the reader where the story is taking place, but doing its primary job of setting — immersing readers in the scene, so they can visualize it, feel it, smell it — but advancing the plot, unifying your story, revealing character, echoing theme, and setting a mood, and more.
I’ll be sharing examples from All The King’s Men, Grapes of Wrath, Great Gatsby, Lonesome Dove, Prodigal Summer, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, and more.

One of my favorite things about BAIPA is its culture of generosity, the willingness — even eagerness — to share what we have each learned in the process of bringing stories to life. We provide educational programs, networking, marketing opportunities, encouragement, and information on industry vendors and services. And lots of one-on-one advice and mentoring.
We welcome all who have an interest in making connections within the world of independent publishing and learning more about how to publish and sell their work successfully. Together we are raising the standard of independent publishing and helping our members thrive.
Do join us!
