At the May 3 meeting, I asked if anyone had experience with Publisher’s Weekly reviews. Not many people had and, in addition, it was clear there was some confusion about these reviews, which is not surprising because, well, it’s confusing! But there are opportunities there that I think many of you will appreciate knowing about.

BookLife is a website with Publisher’s Weekly’s offerings for the indie author world. Their About page is here.

Self-published authors and people who offer services to self-published authors can make an account on the BookLife website. Once you do, your information will be available to people who visit that website.

They offer two kinds of reviews.

  • A BookLife review costs $399. (This is a base rate, some variations cost extra.) They guarantee that your book will get a review, and you’ll have the choice of whether or not it is published.
  • A Publisher’s Weekly review has a $25 submission fee for both indie and traditionally published authors. (It was free until last week!) They do not guarantee that your book will be reviewed, but if it is, it is a prestigious review to receive.

More information about these two review programs can be found here.

BookLife also offers opportunities for promotions and awards, and a collection of helpful resources for indie authors.

One of my favorite things about BAIPA is its culture of generosity, the willingness — even eagerness — to share what we have each learned in the process of bringing stories to life. We provide educational programs, networking, marketing opportunities, encouragement, and information on industry vendors and services. And lots of one-on-one advice and mentoring.

We welcome all who have an interest in making connections within the world of independent publishing and learning more about how to publish and sell their work successfully. Together we are raising the standard of independent publishing and helping our members thrive.
