If you’re an Author with an audiobook, you may have noticed that royalties from Audible (especially) and other platforms as well are frankly kinda pathetically low. Disappointingly low. As someone who started in the audiobook industry in 1981, I’ve found it frustrating that authors keep getting shortchanged.
- Audible may choose (without needing your permission, I might add) to give your audiobook away free as a teaser to get a new subscriber. Audible gets ~$14.95/mo. You as author get $0.
- An Audible customer might decide to return your audiobook for any reason at all. Audible gets their ~$14.95 for the audiobook credit spent. They deduct your royalties from what was paid to you.
- Digital Distributors such as ACX.com try to entice you into going exclusive with a rate of 40%. But they do not say 40% OF WHAT. We assume they mean of whatever they sell it for. But that doesn’t seem to be what the numbers tell us. They seem to have a secret formula to calculate what they consider 40% of the net—or 25% of the net for those savvy enough to go non-exclusive.
- With Audible you have no say in what your audiobook will sell for. On other platforms you can suggest a price at least, but you still have no control over what they do.
