Get Found. Two Good Reasons To Complete or Update Your Member Profile. We estimate that only about one-third of our members have completed their profiles. In some instances, all that's needed for completion is a profile image. On page 1 of the Member Directory, out of 15 names, only 6 have images. Imagine what that looks like to a prospective member thinking about joining or to a new member who only recognizes other members by their faces. Two good reasons to complete or update your Member Profile 1. The Member Directory is searchable by services. People can find you when they need the services you offer (editing, design, audio, printing, publishing, and more.). 2. The Member Directory is publicly searchable — you might attract new clients outside our group. Click HERE for Five Easy Steps to Complete Your Profile. Thank You!

The deadline for our annual book cover contest is November 24. At our December 6 meeting, we'll be voting on the best book covers from BAIPA members. Plus we'll have a panel of designers providing live critiques of six book covers. When you submit your book cover for the contest, you can, if you are feeling brave, check the box that says you are willing to have your cover discussed and critiqued by the panel and the participants at the meeting. We will have time for six critiques. You can submit a finished cover or a work in progress that you're seeking feedback on. More on Copyright and AI

by Kelley Way How your content might find itself in a training database I recently attended a writers conference, and a hot topic among attendees was copyrights and AI. However, they weren’t asking about the copyrightability of AI-generated content or whether AI-generated content might contain someone else’s copyrightable material. Their big concern was whether their own content was part of an AI training database or whether their content would or could end up in an AI training database. It’s an excellent question, so let’s cover how this might happen. 1. Your content was collected into a data aggregator. Some companies collect data from several different sources and pool all this data into a big database. They then sell this data to other companies. Some AI companies (not all, mind you) purchased licenses to copy all this data into their training databases. So if your content made it into one of these [...]

There’s been an explosion of interest in self-publishing, and with it, a tremendous amount of confusion about the various options available to authors who want to self-publish. Some advocate hiring a full service self-publishing company. Others say “hybrid publishers” are the way to go. Still others suggest that it’s best to find your own team of freelancers. Who’s right? It depends. There’s no right way to self-publish and each author will make a different decision based on their skills, goals, and individual circumstances. In this presentation, we’ll explore the various self-publishing pathways using the self-publishing decision tree created and presented by Joel Pitney. We’ll explore the pros and cons of each to give authors the information they need to choose the path best suited for them. BAIPA chat, 11-01-25 Key Takeaways include: Access to a downloadable “self-publishing decision tree” Gaining a detailed understanding of the various self-publishing pathways: hiring a [...]

Seeking Volunteers for December 6 In-Person/Hybrid Meeting

By |2025-11-01T18:06:49-07:00November 1, 2025|BAIPA News, volunteer|Comments Off on Seeking Volunteers for December 6 In-Person/Hybrid Meeting

by John Byrne Barry   BAIPA is an all-volunteer organization and we could not host any meetings without volunteers taking on a variety of tasks. But at least for the zoom meetings, there's not much to do. For the upcoming in-person/hybrid meeting on December 6, we may need more volunteers, mostly for small tasks like mic runner, check-in, setup and cleanup. Many of the members who volunteered for the last several in-person meetings will probably be able to do so again, but we can't leave that to chance. Tricia Sullivan and I are coordinating the volunteers for December's meeting, though, hint, hint, I'd be more than happy to step aside if any of you would raise your hand to work with Tricia on this.  Below are the roles we need with the names of the people who volunteered for the last in-person meeting. If you can volunteer for that role [...]
