SUMMARY:Workshop: Budget Breakdown: What it Takes to Publish Your Book with Joel Pitney
DESCRIPTION:Here’s the next BAIPA Workshop!\nLike our monthly meetings\, these events are exclusively on Zoom. The Zoom links will be provided to you via the confirmation email you will get upon completing your registration\, as well as via email on the Friday evening before\, around 9 PM.\nEVERYONE MUST REGISTER\nfor this two-hour workshop.\nMember tickets are $25.00\, Non-Member tickets are $40. There is also a $15 Recording Only ticket for Members. \nPlease scroll down to the bottom of this page for the ticket selection area.\nThe workshop WILL be recorded and the video will be shared with all paid ticket holders within 48-72 hours.  \n  \n\nMany aspiring authors start their book journey without a clear budget. It’s only natural. Most people who want to write a book are so caught up in the challenge of writing that they don’t spend much time thinking about the many things they will likely have to spend money on as they move from idea to published book to promotions. \nBut just like making a budget for your personal finances\, if you don’t have a clear plan you’re going to end up budgeting by default\, and this usually creates problems. Without a clear book launch budget\, you’re likely going to spend too much money on the wrong things and not enough on the right things. And you’re likely to run out of money before you reach the end of the road. \nThis workshop will help authors avoid this all-too-common scenario. Think of it as a kind of book launch budgeting primer\, helping authors learn how much to budget for each stage of their book launch campaign\, where they might cut corners and where they should not\, and what kind of profits they can expect. Of course\, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to book budgeting\, so we will go through many options so each author can come up with their own plan. \nKey Takeaways: \n\nLearn some “framing principles” to keep in mind while developing a budget.\nReview the most common elements of a book launch campaign and explore how much authors should expect to pay and ways to save or cut corners.\nDiscuss four sample book launch campaign budgets.\nGo through the “math” and break down the potential profitability of a book campaign.\n\n  \n\nAbout Our Speaker: Joel Pitney\n  \n  \n\nAbout Our Speaker \nJoel Pitney is the founder of Launch My Book\, Inc.\, a boutique author services agency dedicated to supporting authors through every stage of the book launching process. Joel’s passion and strength is helping craft messaging and strategy tailored to the unique strengths of each author he works with. His work for Launch My Book includes ghostwriting\, manuscript reviews\, writing book proposals\, providing strategic guidance on author marketing campaigns\, and managing of the company. Attending conferences around the nation\, meeting with industry professionals\, and talking with hundreds of authors every year are just some of the ways Joel stays current with the ever-shifting trends of the publishing industry.. \n\nConnect with Joel \n  \n

SUMMARY:Beyond the Mic: Smart Marketing for Audiobooks & Podcasts—A Hands-On Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Audiobooks and/or podcast episodes—whether as guest or your own podcast—are audio assets useful for marketing. But putting those to work for you is not always easy and often not used strategically. \nIn this workshop you’ll learn how to get strategic about the audiobooks you have and/or podcast episodes you’ve either hosted or been a guest on. We’ll cover techniques for building your author platform and social media following—in ways that fit with who YOU are. \nWe will also do some hands-on work so you can get started on your own strategic plan. With June being Audiobooks Month\, the timing is perfect for this workshop. To maximize your time\, come with a list of your audio assets (audiobooks and podcast episodes) and the current size of your email list. If you can check on the number of followers on social media (whichever platforms you’re active on) that will help you as well. In any case\, come get inspired! Let’s get excited about your marketing (yes\, even YOU can be excited about marketing with this approach)!

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Workshop: Setting That Works with John Byrne Barry
DESCRIPTION:Here’s the next BAIPA Morning Workshop!\nLike our monthly meetings\, these events are exclusively on Zoom\, at least until we get through this COVID-19 crisis. It’s lean and strong because it’s working hard. Doing two or more jobs. Not just showing the reader where the story is taking place\, but also advancing your plot\, unifying various elements of your story\, revealing character\, echoing theme\, setting mood\, and more. \nThe primary job of setting\, of course\, is still most important—to immerse readers in the scene. So they can visualize it\, feel it\, smell it\, so that they are there with your characters. \nThere are going to be times when the setting does nothing more\, and that’s fine. But as often as possible\, you want your setting to be doing more than one job. \nHere are the eight “jobs” setting can do: \n\nAdvance story\nDrive the story\nDefine character\, change character\, reveal character\nEstablish rules (science fiction\, historical fiction)\nUnify the story\nConvey mood and tone\nEcho theme.\nServe as metaphor\n\nThis workshop will include writing exercises to develop skills in:\n\nMaking sure your setting does more than one job.\nBeing deliberate about point of view. Who is doing the describing? What emotions does your character have when she encounters a setting?\nAdding sensual detail. (Not just how something looks.)\nDeciding where the camera is. How close? How far? From whose perspective?\nIdentifying the “telling detail”.\n\nAbout Our Speaker\n  \n \nJohn Byrne Barry is a writer\, designer\, actor\, pickleball player\, and crossing guard. \nHe is author of three plays and three novels\, including When I Killed My Father: An Assisted-Suicide Family Thriller and Bones in the Wash: Politics is Tough. Family is Tougher. \n \nLearn more about John at johnbyrnebarry.com and in his BAIPA profile. \n  \n\n \n
