Some advocate hiring a full service self-publishing company. Others say “hybrid publishers” are the way to go. Still others suggest that it’s best to find your own team of freelancers. Who’s right? \nIt depends. There’s no right way to self-publish and each author will make a different decision based on their skills\, goals\, and individual circumstances. \nIn this presentation\, we’ll explore the various self-publishing pathways using the self-publishing decision tree created and presented by Joel Pitney. We’ll explore the pros and cons of each to give authors the information they need to choose the path best suited for them. \nKey Takeaways include: \n\nAccess to a downloadable “self-publishing decision tree”\nGaining a detailed understanding of the various self-publishing pathways: hiring a company\, hybrid publishing\, assembling your own team\, Do-It-Yourself (DIY)\nObtaining a general understanding of the cost differences between the different approaches\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker\n\n \nJoel Pitney is the founder of Launch My Book\, Inc.\, a boutique author services agency dedicated to supporting authors through every stage of the book launching process. But most aren’t earning a living through book sales alone. So where does the money come from? Find out. \nGetting a book published is a major milestone that every author should celebrate\, each and every time it happens\, yet it rarely leads to the kind of success or earnings that everyone hopes for. Few authors are open and transparent about what they earn and most will take offense if you ask. Because of the taboo surrounding earnings\, it’s easy to assume everyone is doing better than you. But they probably aren’t. Few people make a living solely by writing and publishing books\, unless they have a big platform or a long career with a big backlist. So where does the money come from if not sales? In addition to day jobs\, writers earn money through patronage/donations\, advertising/sponsorships\, and services. \nKey Takeaways include: \n\n4 key ways that writers earn money\nHow strategy differs when you’re appealing to gatekeepers vs readers\nThe most likely type of writer to earn a living through book sales alone\nThe often overlooked and ignored ways that writers can earn money.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker: Jane Friedman\nJane Friedman has spent nearly 25 years working in the book publishing industry\, with a focus on author education and trend reporting. Her latest book is The Business of Being a Writer\, second edition (University of Chicago Press\, 2025)\, which received a starred review from Library Journal. In addition to serving on grant panels for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Creative Work Fund\, she works with organizations such as The Authors Guild to bring transparency to the business of publishing. \nConnect with Jane: janefriedman.com \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Optimize Your Book Launch Success: How to Coordinate Book Production and Marketing Timelines
DESCRIPTION:BAIPA monthly meetings are now on Zoom\, with occasional hybrid meetings (Zoom and in-person). The Zoom links will be provided to you via email on the Friday evening before\, around 9 PM.\nTherefore\, all non-members MUST register in advance in order to participate. However\, all current BAIPA members will get the Zoom info for this session automatically.\nPlease scroll down to the bottom of this page if you need a non-member ticket.\nThe general meeting begins at 9 am\, the speaker presentation is at 11 am\, after Q&A\, networking time\, introductions & announcements.\n(Click here for the schedule for the day)\n\n\nFULL PRESENTATION (9am-12:15pm PST):\nThe Secret to Improving Self-Publishing Results: Mastering Publishing Timelines while Baking Book Marketing into the Process\nDavid Wogahn\, author of the Countdown to Book Launch series\n\n\nBook marketing is often thought of as an activity that begins with the release of one’s book. The reality is that a book is like a loaf of bread—it begins to age over time once it’s released. As self-publishers\, we can feel like we’re in a race to delay or slow down this aging process during the most critical period of our new book’s life. \nHow do we improve the odds of launch success and the longer-term viability of our book? By baking marketing into the book design and production process before the book is released. \nDavid Wogahn and his company AuthorImprints have produced more than 400 books for independent authors in the last 14 years. During that time\, he has developed a methodology and timeline that authors can use to better prepare for post-book-release success. \nBased on his Countdown to Book Launch® timeline\, David will explain when key marketing events should be undertaken relative to steps in the production and distribution process. \nKey Takeaways include: \n\nHow and when to use the A-B-C list method for reaching testimonial writers\, influencers\, and readers/buyers.\nHow to coordinate print book pre-order using IngramSpark and Amazon KDP to meet deadlines and avoid publishing the wrong version of your book.\nWhen and how to do the five steps of comparable book and author research and what to do with the information you uncover.\nYou’ll learn a methodology for dividing book production into key components and how to coordinate those with pre-release marketing that can be applied to any type of book.\n\nAttendees will receive a copy of his comprehensive Countdown to Book Launch Timeline that they can use for their own book launch planning. It’s flexible enough to be adapted for self-publishing any type of book regardless of an author’s goals. \nTo further aid our members in applying this methodology to their own circumstances\, David has agreed to receive questions from members in advance of the meeting. He’ll use these in the second part of his presentation to provide his advice on attendee book preparation and launch planning. To submit a question on book production and marketing timelines for your book\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker: David Wogahn\n \nDavid Wogahn is the author of six self-published books\, including the Countdown to Book Launch series of publishing guides and the Before the Launch workbook. In 2012\, he became the author of the first LinkedIn Learning course on the topic of self-publishing (Lynda.com at the time).\nDavid is a frequent speaker and trainer\, and has given presentations and taught classes for Writer’s Digest University\, Jane Friedman\, the Independent Book Publishers Association\, IBPA Publishing University\, the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi)\, and the Santa Barbara Writers Conference\, among other publishing professional organizations. \nBefore founding the author services firm AuthorImprints.com in 2011\, David worked for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee and the Los Angeles Times\, and was co-founder and COO of the first online publisher of college sports-team branded websites formerly known as the CBS College Sports Network. \nConnect with David

SUMMARY:The Untold Story of Books with author Michael Castleman
DESCRIPTION:BAIPA monthly meetings are now on Zoom\, with occasional hybrid meetings (Zoom and in-person). The Zoom links will be provided to you via email on the Friday evening before\, around 9 PM.\nTherefore\, all non-members MUST register in advance in order to participate. However\, all current BAIPA members will get the Zoom info for this session automatically.\nPlease scroll down to the bottom of this page if you need a non-member ticket.\nThe general meeting begins at 9 am\, the speaker presentation is at 11 am\, after Q&A\, networking time\, introductions & announcements.\n(Click here for the schedule for the day)\n\n\nMORNING PRESENTATION:\nWhat We Call “Traditional Publishing” Is Actually\na Brief\, 80-Year Detour from 400+ Years of Self-Publishing\nMichael Castleman\, San Francisco journalist and author\n\n\nMy latest release\, The Untold Story of Books\, recounts the bittersweet saga of publishing from Gutenberg to Amazon. It explores how\, since 2000\, digital technology has transformed publishing. Authors now enjoy two new paths to publication: self- and hybrid publishing\, doing everything themselves or paying publishers-for-hire. These two novel models have upended “traditional” publishing\, threatening the Big Five New York houses whose imprints have familiar names. \nActually\, traditional publishing is a misnomer. It’s been the dominant paradigm for only 80 of publishing’s 575 years\, 1920-2000. For 495 years\, authors have self-published. There have been three separate\, distinct business models. From Gutenberg through 1920\, the first book business\, there were no publishers. Early American authors self-published (with wealthy patrons sometimes contributing). Authors hired printers then marketed their books on their own. The other eras will be covered in Michael’s presentation. \nBook writing today has become a high-tech update of the first book business\, not a career\, but maybe an expensive hobby. \nKey Takeaways include: \n\nUnderstand that self-publishing has been the dominant book publishing model for 495 of publishing’s 575 years.\nHear about how there have been three separate and distinct book businesses.\nLearn how all three have been defined by the technology of printing.\nKnow that it’s easier than ever to publish books—and harder than ever to sell them.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker: Michael Castleman\nSan Francisco journalist and author Michael Castleman\, 74\, has published 3\,000 magazine and web articles and 19 books\, most recently The Untold Story of Books: A Writer’s History of Book Publishing (Unnamed Press\, LA). It went into a second printing just 8 weeks after publication. Its Amazon page boasts 35 Editorial Reviews and 40 customer reviews with a rating of 4.9 out of 5. Castleman grew up in a suburb of New York City and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan (1972). He earned a Masters in Journalism at UC Berkeley (1979). He began researching the history of book publishing in 1979\, the year he signed his first book contract.\nConnect with Michael

SUMMARY:Don't just hit publish\, LAUNCH your book!
DESCRIPTION:BAIPA monthly meetings are now on Zoom. The Zoom links will be provided to you via email on the Friday evening before\, around 9 PM Pacific.\nTherefore\, all non-members MUST register in advance in order to participate. However\, all current BAIPA members will get the Zoom info for this session automatically.\nPlease scroll down to the bottom of this page if you need a non-member ticket.\nThe general meeting begins at 9 am Pacific\, the speaker presentation is at 11 am Pacific\, after Q&A\, networking time\, introductions & announcements.\n(Click here for the schedule for the day)\n\n\nMONTHLY PRESENTATION:\nDon’t just hit publish\, launch your book!\nHave you realized that publishing isn’t the final goal?\nRobbie Samuels\, Award-Winning Author\, Event Design Consultant & Networking Expert\n\n\nCongrats\, you wrote a book! You’ve been counting down to the day it publishes. Have you realized that publishing isn’t the final goal? \nWouldn’t it be great if your network actually read your book and discovered how valuable your content is\, so they can buy from you and/or refer you? \nWhat’s your strategy to use this book to wake up and engage your network? \nOur presenter\, Robbie Samuels\, designs book launches with the aim of getting 50+ Amazon reviews\, but the real goal is to wake up and engage the author’s network to build a pipeline and drive referrals. \nWhile a byproduct of a strong launch is reaching #1 Best Seller\, that’s not the goal. Being a #1 Best Seller or #1 New Release is a fleeting accomplishment\, while Amazon reviews are social proof that stay on your book’s sales page. \nRobbie has received over 200 reviews for each of his independently published books\, which collectively reached #1 Best Seller in 30 categories across four countries. \nJoin this session to learn how Robbie has built large book launch teams filled with likely prospects and likely referral partners\, and nurtured team members through writing and posting an Amazon review. \nHe will cover four areas: timing\, building a launch team\, getting 50+ Amazon reviews\, and designing a virtual book launch party. \nKey Takeaways include: \n\nDifferentiate between your book’s publish date and launch date and how that fits into your 8+ week launch timeline.\nIdentify likely prospects\, referral partners\, and fellow authors for your launch team – and what pitfalls to avoid.\nPersonalize outreach through an email nurture sequence that guides launch team members through each step of the process.\nDesign a virtual book launch party that builds momentum for the author’s next offer rather than focus on the author’s success.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker: Robbie Samuels\n \nRobbie Samuels  is the award-winning author of three independently published books that have collectively received over 650 Amazon reviews and reached #1 Best Seller in 30 paid categories in the U.S.\, U.K.\, Canada\, and Australia: \n\nBreak Out of Boredom: Low-Tech Solutions for Highly Engaging Zoom Events (which won a Gold award from the Nonfiction Authors Association)\nSmall List\, Big Results: Launch a Successful Offer No Matter the Size of Your Email List\nCroissants vs. Bagels: Strategic\, Effective\, and Inclusive Networking at Conferences\n\nAs a book launch strategist\, he helps entrepreneurs build launch teams that lead to referrals\, build their pipeline\, and get 50+ Amazon reviews. He also designs and emcees virtual book launch parties that lead prospects to an offer. He founded the Biz Book Publishing Hub\, with over 50 experts ready to help authors navigate the complexities of writing\, editing\, publishing\, and marketing their business books. \nRobbie is an event design consultant and executive Zoom producer recognized as a networking expert by NPR\, Harvard Business Review\, Forbes\, Lifehacker\, and Inc. He is also a professional speaker\, TEDx speaker\, HBR contributor\, and host of the On the Schmooze podcast. \nRobbie is the openly transgender owner of Robbie Samuels LLC\, a certified LGBT Business Enterprise. \nConnect with Robbie
