SUMMARY:Branding for Authors with Beth Barany
DESCRIPTION:General meeting begins at 9 am\, speaker presentation is at 11 am\, after Q&A\, networking time\, introductions & announcements\, followed by a brief lunch break and then our Afteroon Workshop from 1–3 pm. Scroll down for details and to register.\n(Click here for the schedule for the day)\nCurrent BAIPA members must log in first to get a free ticket to the morning session and a discounted ticket for the afternoon workshop. Then come back to this page. There is a Member login link in the upper right corner of the site.\n\n MORNING PRESENTATION:\nBranding for Authors: The Essentials\n\nTo reach your readers\, lots of experts tell you to blog\, and use social media\, and send out newsletters. But you’d rather work on your next book. Marketing obligations are overwhelming. Where do you actually start?\n\n• How will anyone discover your book if you don’t take the time to create a sustainable marketing plan?\n• How can you launch and get support for your book?\n• How will anyone discover your book?\n\nYou’ve spent hours and hours\, maybe years on writing and polishing your novel.\n\nYou’ve uploaded it to all the vendors and waited for that first sale. But nothing.\n\nNo sales\, except maybe from your mother and best friend.\n\nYou realize you don’t even know what to say to get readers interested in buying your book.\n\nIf you’re planning to publish soon\, you need to know exactly what to say to get readers interested in your book.\n\nOr maybe it’s like this…\n\nYou’ve been publishing for a while but promoting feels like a black hole.\n\nYou’re doing everything\, but you have no strategy and no coherent message.\n\nYou post on Instagram\, Facebook\, Twitter\, Goodreads\, etc. and are so tired you don’t have time to write the next book because you’re promoting all the time and constantly trying to figure out what to say next. I get it.\n\nThat’s why Beth Barany created this workshop. So when you work through the foundations of branding and marketing\, you can gain clarity\, peace of mind\, and map out a plan of action.\n  \nThe Branding For Authors workshop is for self-published or traditionally published authors preparing to launch their books into the world.\nOver 250 students have used this method to build their marketing foundation. \n\n\n\n\nWe’ll cover the importance of: \n• A one-sentence branding statement and how it can help you spread the word about your book\n• Your author bio that carries the message about your book and your mission\n• A mailing list so that you can cultivate a community\n• Launch campaigns to reach your best readers\n• A sustainable promotional content plan to fit your life and your brand \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAFTERNOON WORKSHOP\nFoundation of Your Author Branding:\nCraft Your Author Branding Statement\nMany authors think that book promotions are about giving away tchotchkes — like bookmarks\, key rings\, coffee mugs\, and the like — to get attention for their books. But actually\, book promotions start with one of the most powerful yet overlooked methods to promote your books to your readers: what you actually say. Word of mouth still sells more books than any other promotional tool out there. And aspiring authors: You can use this tool now. Promotions for your author career begins now. \nIf you just state what you write in a way that generates curiosity\, then you can get more people engaged with what you write. Ultimately\, they will become your avid fans and book buyers. Bonus: All on a zero budget! \nWhat if you could you share what you write in one sentence and immediately know if your listener was curious\, or not? Because once a potential reader is curious and wants to know more\, then you can ask for her email for your newsletter list (you have one\, right?)\, or if appropriate\, invite her to your online home of choice (blog\, website\, Facebook page\, etc.) So\, how do you generate curiosity? You learn to talk about your story in a compelling and interesting way. You create an Author Branding Statement. \nThere are four ingredients to constructing this concise\, one-sentence description of your book. The goal of this workshop is for you to design a statement that easily rolls off your tongue\, and answers the questions we get at meetings\, conferences\, parties and even in the grocery store checkout line: “What do you write?” \nNail down the four ingredients to create your Clear Message: \n• Your genre\n• Your audience\n• Your audience’s desired result or experience: what they want\n• Your intended action upon your readers \n\nAbout Our Speaker: Beth Barany\n \nMaster NLP Practitioner\, workshop leader\, and certified creativity coach for writers\, Beth Barany runs Barany School of Fiction. This online school offers a full suite of courses designed to help genre fiction writers experience clarity and get writing\, so they can revise and proudly publish their novels to the delight of their readers. SUMMARY:Selling Your Book as Part of a Course\, Workshop or Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Presenting David Cook for our Morning Presentation and Deborah Myers for the Afternoon Workshop\n(General meeting begins at 9 am\, speaker presentation is at 11 am\, after Q&A\, networking time\, introductions & announcements)\, followed by our afternoon workshop from 1:00 PM-3 PM. Scroll down for details and to register.\n(Click here for the schedule for the day)\nCurrent BAIPA members must log in first to get a free ticket to the morning session and a discounted ticket for the afternoon workshop. Then come back to this page. There is a Member Log in link in the upper right corner of the site.\nMORNING PRESENTATION:\nDavid Cook\,  Author of Build Your Dream House for a Song\,\nmarketed his book in an unconventional way\, and he continues to do so.\nDavid teaches a class at community colleges and adult education programs\, and he doesn’t have a teaching credential—that’s the beauty of these programs. You can teach a class on pretty much any subject and often you can make your materials a mandatory purchase by anyone wishing to take your class and learn what you have to offer. The list of subjects is endless. David will help you get started in this lucrative and unconventional way of selling your book. He has sold thousands of copies of his book\, Build Your Dream House for a Song at full retail with an incredible $15 profit on each book sold. David is also a former BAIPA President. Come and learn from a seasoned pro how you can do the same. \n  \nAbout our Morning Speaker\nDavid Cook \nDavid Cook was born in London\, England and lived there with his mother\, sister\, two aunts and grandmother until the age of thirteen\, at which time his mother took him and his sister to Australia to meet their father. At the age of eighteen\, David’s drive for adventure prompted him to leave Australia. He borrowed five dollars\, left a note for his mother and boarded a Swedish ship for places unknown. It wasn’t until he was on the high seas that David asked where the ship was bound. After stops in several ports\, he arrived at the ship’s final destination\, which was San Francisco\, California. He never looked back\, settled there and is the proud father of two beautiful and accomplished daughters\, Emily and Elizabeth. \nWhile working full time as a television salesman\, David and his wife took advantage of the burgeoning California real estate market. They bought and sold several houses and dabbled a little in DIY before that was trendy. Then they bought a vacant lot and had a contractor build a house\, which they immediately sold. That experience awakened something in David; an idea he became extremely excited about. He wanted to build his own house! \nHe began to investigate the possibilities. He enrolled in classes about various topics around owner building\, knowing that his dream could come to fruition. Quickly following his studies\, David and his wife purchased a larger property. This was it! He was going to build a house with his own hands. Using their small business to help finance the effort\, David and Marcia worked out the details and David started materializing his dream. Marcia ran the business while David took over many of the responsibilities of raising their young daughters and building the house while the children were in school. \nAfter completing his house David wrote a book\, Build Your Dream House for a Song\, so that he could share his experience of bringing his vision to life. The book documents his progressive and imaginative thinking and the joy of building a simple but beautiful house for pennies on the dollar. Based on his book\, David created a seminar that he taught for the next ten years\, “How to Build Your Dream House for a Song” at colleges around the country. His book is now in its fifth edition and is also available in Spanish. \nDavid wants to make a TV show to illustrate how a beautiful\, incredible and “Green” house can be built for very little money using his forward-thinking techniques. This show will inspire people everywhere to do the same\, to be empowered\, to be independent and to live the life they would like without having the mortgage yoke around their neck for thirty years. \n  \nAFTERNOON WORKSHOP\nDeborah Myers has taken her Easy Self-Help Acupressure content and turned it into multiple formats: video/book packages\, workshops\, presentations\, and trainings\, including her manuals and books as part of these deliverables.\nNo matter if you have a non-fiction or fiction book\, it’s possible to create a class or presentation around the content and include the book as part of the event. During the first hour\, Deborah will show you how she created programs that included her books\, starting from her first workshop manual through her Easy Self-Help Acupressure video/book packages. She will also speak to the importance of looking to your audience\, your target markets and finding out what they want from you. After you truly talk and listen\, then you create what will meet their needs. Keep in mind that you can have multiple audiences\, and you can turn your content into multiple products for those different audiences. \nDuring the second hour\, Deborah will lead the participants in a series of 10-minute brainstorming sessions for those present who want to look at how to sell their book and content in new ways. We can accommodate five authors (first-come\, first served)\, allowing for some intro and wrap-up time\, so if you want one of these slots\, please provide the info requested as part of the workshop registration. You MUST register in advance for the afternoon workshop in order to qualify for one of these brainstorming slots. \nDeborah will also be emailing every participant the ebook edition of her Easy Self-Help Acupressure for Grown-Ups book. \nAbout our Afternoon Workshop Leader\nDeborah Myers \nDeborah is a Certified Acupressurist and Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner and has been helping clients since 1995 to discover how to more easily become who they want to be physically\, emotionally and mentally. In her private practice\, she assists individual clients in their search for stress reduction\, pain relief\, and healing. \nDeborah is passionate about empowering others to live a balanced\, healthy lifestyle. She is committed to teaching others how they can be partners with their own bodies by utilizing self-help energy balancing techniques. Her workplace wellness programs are bringing success and vitality to many businesses. She has written a go-to energy first-aid manual that explains the energy points of Jin Shin Jyutsu\, an ancient form of Japanese acupressure. \nDeborah is dedicated to helping young people discover how to be healthier\, happier and more productive at home and in the classroom. Kids\, parents\, and teachers are finding that the program helps to increase clarity and focus\, reduce anxiety\, balance emotions\, increase mindfulness\, foster pleasant learning experiences and enhance daily activities. To make it even more appealing and fun\, Deborah created an animated video of the Daily Clean Your House Flow®\, a nine-step self-help acupressure flow. She has written three guidebooks that are perfect complements to the six-and-a-half minute animated video and offer clear explanations and colorful illustrations. \nThrough healing sessions\, coaching\, workshops\, workplace wellness programs and her Easy Self-Help Acupressure video and books\, Deborah has helped thousands of people of all ages discover how they can easily attract what they want in their lives and have health at their fingertips.

SUMMARY:[PAST EVENT] June Event: The Author's Winning Team
DESCRIPTION:Morning Speaker Presentation\n11 AM to 12:15 PM\nSelf-publishing doesn’t mean you have to do it all by yourself.\nFor most authors\, it’s best to build a team.\nAnd Afternoon Workshop on Sustainable Book Marketing\nwith Anne Janzer\, Indie Author\n (General meeting begins at 9 AM\, speaker presentation is at 11 AM\, after Q&A\, networking time\, introductions & announcements)\n(Click here for the schedule for the day)\nCurrent BAIPA members must log in first to get a free ticket to the morning session and a discounted ticket for the afternoon workshop. Then come back to this page.\nFor our June BAIPA morning session\, we’re presenting a panel of authors and service providers — Cathy Wild\, Anne Janzer\, Lorna Johnson\, and Meghan Stephenson — who will share stories about building an author’s winning team from their perspectives as authors\, editors\, printers\, and marketers. \nThis will be a highly interactive conversation and we encourage you to send us your questions about building your author’s dream team ahead of the presentation to programs@baipa.org using the subject line: Author’s Dream Team Q&A. \nJohn Byrne Barry\, author and webmaster for BAIPA\, will moderate the panel. \n\nOUR PANELISTS \nCathy Wild will present a case study about her experience as an author who had the good fortune to pull together a winning team for her multiple award-winning Wild Ideas: Creativity from the Inside Out. \nThough she did attract a number of people who read her book in manuscript form and loved it so much they volunteered to help with editing\, funding\, and project management\, she also hired a designer\, copy editor\, proofreader\, and marketing consultant. \n“The publishing process is more democratized than ever before\,” she says\, “but navigating it involves a complex web of decision-making amidst a rapidly changing industry. It is hard to start\, let alone complete\, that daunting journey without outside support.” \n\n \nAnne Janzer\, an indie author who writes about marketing as well as writing\, will highlight the three teams than an indie author manages — the production/publishing team (getting the book ready for publication)\, the launch team\, and the ongoing marketing team. \nIn her previous career\, she was a marketer. Her marketing manifesto\, Subscription Marketing\, is in its second edition and a bestseller in Japan. She’s also an armchair cognitive science geek\, as you’ll discover if you talk with her long enough or read her book\, The Writer’s Process: Getting Your Brain in Gear. Find out more at annejanzer.com \nShe will also be leading the afternoon workshop — Sustainable Book Marketing: Long-term Success with Less Stress. \n\n \nLorna Johnson\, a print broker and book production designer\, will talk about how\, as a printer\, she collaborates with the author and designer to function well as a team. She will also address the question of when it makes sense to print your book offset instead of print on demand. \nLorna produces custom books\, calendars\, boxed notecards\, catalogs\, and more for self-publishers\, authors\, small businesses\, and book publishers. \nSee more at lornajohnson.com. \n\n\n\n \nMeghan Stevenson worked at Simon & Schuster and Penguin as a nonfiction book editor before launching her freelance business in 2012. Since then\, Meghan has edited\, ghostwritten and/or collaborated with more than fifty authors\, celebrities\, and influencers writing within a wide array of categories including health\, fitness\, diet\, wellness\, memoir\, psychology\, business\, parenting\, personal finance\, fashion\, medicine\, spirituality\, and sports. \nMeghan will speak about her role as an author and marketing expert. \n\n\n\n\n\nAfternoon Workshop: 1-3 PM\nSustainable Book Marketing: Long-term Success with Less Stress\nwith Anne Janzer (see above bio)\nAre you overwhelmed by conflicting advice about how to market and promote your books?  Do you worry that you’re not doing the right things\, or that you’re missing some magic formula? Or\, do you spend so much time chasing book promotions and sales that there’s no time left to write the next book? \nFor many authors\, marketing and promotion are a foreign and frightening territory. But it doesn’t have to be that way. \nThe trick is finding a sustainable approach to book marketing – one that survives changes in the market\, doesn’t cost more than you can afford to spend and plays to your strengths. \nA sustainable approach to book marketing leaves you time to write. Done well\, it can even be fun. \nIn this interactive workshop\, we’ll look at what a sustainable book marketing strategy looks like for your specific situation. The workshop will combine insight into the indie publishing industry with a dash of cognitive science to help you identify a book marketing path that makes sense for you. You’ll leave with strategies and inspiration to build your long-term success as an author. \n\nQuestions about registration: Please reach out to events@baipa.org.
