November 14, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Free – $55

email computer“Other than writing well and consistently, building your email list should be your Number One goal as an author.”—Tim Grahl

Many authors don’t realize that the most valuable asset they can build—outside their own writing—is an email list of people interested in their work. Learn why successful authors build email lists, and how you can do it too.

Join us on Saturday, November 14 and learn how to build this valuable skill from award-winning book designer, blogger, writer and BAIPA member Joel Friedlander.

Joel Friedlander

Joel has had remarkable success in building his email list—in fact, he has more than 40,000 people on various email lists, and they have become his primary marketing tool. Joel writes in a conversational style, mixes free information with commercial offers, and maintains a high level of engagement with his readers.  He’s been launching the careers of self-publishers since 1994 from his book design and consulting practice at Marin Bookworks (also known as “JFBookman”) in San Rafael.

Morning Session: 11am to 12:15pm

Authors and Email: The Missing Link?

If you’re an author, you already have too much to do—working on a book in progress, setting up your publishing company, promoting your book on social media and operating a blog. But what’s missing for too many authors is actually a key element for success in making publishing a profitable enterprise—a large email list of interested parties.

What you will learn from this program:

  •        Why successful fiction and nonfiction authors make building a strong email list a priority
  •        How to tell who in your field is building an email list
  •        Why your marketing begins with your email list
  •        Which is more valuable—email or social media?
  •        The one huge advantage of email
  •        Email and publicity, book reviews and book sales
  •        Building community, authority and likability

Join us for this lively and fast-paced presentation, and learn why savvy authors are building their email lists right now, and how you can too!

Then take advantage of the time between the morning and afternoon session to network with your fellow attendees. There are a number of great lunch places within a five minute drive of The Key Room.

Afternoon Workshop: 1pm to 3 pm

Master Email for Authors

In this two-part workshop, Joel will walk you through the steps to get yourself set up, and then put your email list to use.

Session 1: Building Your Email List

  • The importance of traffic
  • No-fear Internet “plumbing”
  • Options for non-techies
  • Choosing an email service provider
  • Live events, offline and online
  • Crafting incentives

Session 2: Using Your Email List

  • What to mail, when to mail, and how often to mail
  • Newsletters, follow-ups, and broadcasts
  • What’s an “auto responder” and why should I care?
  • How to write an email that gets a response
  • Why you need a call to action
  • Email campaigns (sequences)
  • Book launches driven by email
  • Email best practices

There will be plenty of time for Q&A in both parts of the workshop, which is designed to be interactive. Bring your email questions and ideas—Joel would love to hear them.
