His morning presentation is “An Effective WordPress Website for the Independent Publisher: How Can Your Website Be More Successful and Sell More Books?” What do you, as an independent publisher, need to know about WordPress, its functionality and Search Engine Optimization, whether you’re working with a designer or managing the website yourself?

In the afternoon workshop, Chris will provide hands-on consultation on how to improve your WordPress site, regarding hosting, themes, customization, making your website faster and more secure and tying social media to your website. So bring your laptop and your questions about this popular publishing platform.
The workshop program will drill down to specifics such as:

  • How to set up and maintain both a blog and static pages on a WordPress website
  • How to personalize your WordPress website with templates and plug-ins
  • How to sell your books/ebooks/products directly from your WordPress website
  • How to get advertising for your book content on your WordPress website
  • How to use your blog and your static pages to build your author reputation and authority
  • How to maintain your WordPress website yourself, hiring design skills as needed and using your own knowledge to swap content in and out.

Christensen won a 2014 Travel + Leisure Smitty Award for Best Independent Travel Journalist /Blogger, for his website Amateur Traveler, which features audio, podcasts and video on a WordPress website.

His WordPress website This Week in Travel was a recent Gold Medal winner in Broadcast from the North American Travel Journalism Association.

Whether you know nothing or everything about WordPress, Chris’s talk will benefit you!

About Me: I am a writer, editor and actor living just north of the Golden Gate Bridge with my teacher/author wife and our soon-to-be-author daughters. And our apparently non-literary cat. I recently started a small independent publishing company, Stillpoint Digital Press. I have overseen the publications program of the Joseph Campbell Foundation since 1999. I have edited three posthumous volumes of Campbell's unpublished writing and lectures and overseen the publication of eleven additional print titles, the most recent being the third edition of The Hero with a Thousand Faces. I recently published my teen historical adventure novel Risuko: A Kunoichi Tale, and am at work on the sequel, Bright-Eyes About Stillpoint Digital Press: When I started Stillpoint Digital Press, all that I intended to do was to take my own varied experience as a writer, an editor, and an ebook designer and offer a service that was both more professional and more personal than that offered by the ebook self-publishing "services": digital publishing with a human face. From the beginning, that idea has resonated — and has brought me in directions that I never anticipated. One of my first projects was a memoir by former merchant seaman Jack Beritzhoff. When I began outlining my plans to Jack, talking through the editorial process and discussing the benefits of publishing his autobiographical work in ebook form, the ninety-four-year old nodded, smiled, and said. That sounds great. But I also want to be able to hold my book. Well, who was I to deny Jack? And so Stillpoint became, quite outside of my plans, a traditional print publisher. The launch party and book signing for Sail Away was one of the prouder moments of my career in publishing. Similarly, when Linda Finch began talking with me about bringing out a new edition of The Seven Gods of Luck, and I had created the print and ebook editions, I realized that I wanted to add a read-aloud track. Well, we have professional recording facilities, so that was easy. Suddenly, I found that we were in the audiobook business as well. Our aim is to be as responsive as we can for our clients and partners, creating truly fine editions, no matter what the medium. So tell us: what can Stillpoint do for you?
