Estate Planning for Authors

This presentation will cover estate planning, copyrights and how they intersect. Specifically, it will cover what estate planning is, why it’s important, and key documents in an estate plan, such as a will and trust. Then it will discuss copyright law as it relates to estate planning, and will give some practical steps for those who want to include their copyrights in their estate plan.
Takaways:
1. Understand what estate planning is and what’s involved in creating an estate plan.
2. Learn the difference between a will and a trust, and the roles they play in an estate plan.
3. Understand copyright law as it relates to estate planning.
4. Know what steps to take to make sure that your copyright(s) continue to be managed properly and don’t cause problems when administering an estate.
AFTERNOON PRESENTATION:
Administering an Author’s Estate

This workshop will go through the steps that an executor/trustee must take to close out the estate of a deceased author – who needs to be notified, how to find assets and transfer ownership, and what to do with the deceased author’s copyrights.
Takaways:
1. Learn what’s legally required of a trustee/executor.
2. Learn the difference between a trustee and an executor.
3. Learn how to administer and close a deceased person’s estate.
4. Learn how to deal with copyrights in a deceased person’s estate.
